A particularly cruel episode of the war (the sacking of a whole village in the Appenines and the extermination of the habitants) comes to light after many years when the responsible of the massacre accedes to the office of the bishop at the conclusion of a brilliant ecclesiastical career. He evokes the usual excuse of obedience to orders for his defence, but of course his moral image is destroyed.
