This film recounts the last few days in the life of the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. By the beginning of 1945, Mussolini recognizes the hopelessness of his situation and decides to take refuge in the Italian Alps. When Italian soldiers fail to meet him there, he is hidden by German troops who intend to escort him to safety in Germany. Recognized by a group of peasants, he is caught and executed, along with his mistress, Claretta Petacci.
