When I created Surf Film many years ago, I tried to remember the advice of my old boss: “Buy pictures rights and negatives: it is the future of the movie business”.
He was right, I have been doing it for thirty years and I reached a great amount of titles. Nowadays Surf Film is one of the biggest European Libraries of feature films.
One of the most important meetings of my professional life was with the great producer, and Sophia Loren’s husband, Mr. Carlo Ponti. At the end of a long meeting we agreed that I would buy part of his library: classic Italian films like “Two women”, “A special day”, “Yesterday today and tomorrow” and many others entered our catalogue, and I was very proud.
In 1986 we experimented with production: until now we have produced about 40 titles. We have produced some successful titles like “Quiet days in Clichy” by Chabrol, or “The sleazy uncle” by Brusati, but, to be honest, we are still famous for our classic: Vittorio De Sica, Gillo Pontecorvo, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini and others.
Recently, taking advantage of new technologies, we are able restore old classics, which come back to their original, and marvellous, photography and sound.
Spaghetti Western is also a huge part of our catalogue. Thanks to directors like Fulci and Bava , actors like Franco Nero and great technicians, Italian cinema has realized action movies sold and still selling everywhere in the world.
I wish a good future to our cinema. In the last decades, except for a few wonderful exceptions, Italian cinema has not reached the majestic levels of what it was in the 50s, 60s and 70s. We are still remembered for those golden years a small credit also belongs to Surf Film.
